Matthew 9:24 “He said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him.”
To really appreciate what happened when Jesus entered the Jewish leader’s home to raise his daughter from the dead, you really have to read that whole chapter. Event after event, Jesus goes from person to person, performing miracles.
This would seem to be a glorious crescendo of a series of events that was nothing less than miraculous. Imagine Jesus coming through all of these episodes of healing with crowds rejoicing and praising God over the wonderful things and works he performed.
Then, Jesus comes up to the religious leader’s home. His daughter had just passed away, and the crowd was performing rituals consistent with the time after someone’s death. Jesus comes to the door and tells them she is not dead, but she is simply asleep. The crowd’s response was they all laughed at Him. What a slap in the face it must have felt like! How hurtful it must have been. Christ could have easily just turned and walked out the door.
But the scripture tells us that once the crowd was put out, He went in and took the young girl’s hand, and she arose from the dead. Simply put, if you are going to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, some are going to praise, and yet others will laugh.
Today, you may be experiencing responses from those around you because of your following Christ. Sometimes it can be very hurtful. Especially when it comes from people who are supposed to be Believers too.
Our example from Jesus was not to turn to the left or to the right. Not to look behind, but simply to go forward with the task before you. Move with purpose, and move with confidence in your journey with God. Do not be affected by the weights and the opinions of hecklers and those who want to cast doubt on the steps that you take.
It is interesting that when Jesus left, it says nothing about the response of those that had been laughing when they saw him holding the hand of the girl who had been dead. Why? Because it probably was silent.
Remember their response. The world’s response cannot change you when you follow Jesus Christ.
Have a blessed day.
