James 1:23-24 “If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice, you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like.”
I remember some years ago, Billy Crystal played a character named Fernando. A man of Spanish decent. Fernando became famous for the lines, “You look marvelous,” and, “May I say, it is better to look good than to feel good.”
He was hilarious. You can still watch him on YouTube. I dare say Fernando spent a great deal of time in the mirror. Most of us would opine that he may have been somewhat shallow and without depth to character.
The Bible describes the believer who listens and does not practice what they hear like a person who stares in the mirror. They may be well pleased at the details in their appearance.
In their mind, they know who they are. But as they turn away, they move on with life and forget the details of what they saw in the mirror. They forget their commitment. They do not remember the difference they wanted to make. Their lives are just too busy.
Today, don’t be a Fernando. Commit to listen, look, and live in the presence of Jesus every moment and way.
If you need to run back to the mirror and view your commitment eight times on Monday, then do it. Better eight minutes by the side of Jesus than eight hours wandering around the room by yourself.
Have a blessed day.
