2 Thessalonians 3:3 “But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.”
One of my attorney friends this week was telling me about his experience of allowing his daughter to go on her first date at the age of 16. It just happened within the last month or so.
He actually escorted and drove his daughter and her date to the movie theater. Afterward, the couple went to the hamburger shop next door. The reason he knows all of this is because he actually was not only the driver but also the father/chaperone/spy lingering around the corner in his car with a pair of binoculars! He even went so far as to wear a hoodie on his walk by the restaurant in order to get a glimpse of his daughter and her date.
He tells a hilarious story that when his daughter called on the cell phone for a ride home, and he told her to meet him outside the front of the restaurant. He quickly drove around the block 3 or 4 times to make it seem as though there was some delay, accounting for a drive from his house. Needless to say, on the way home, he watched intently in the rearview mirror to make sure that there was no hanky-panky. I found his story rather great.
In reflection, I started to think about how we often think of God is just hanging out as a pinata for the world and Satan to toy with. We know that He gives us strength, but at the same time, I almost think of the Lord as being like that father who is intently watching and ready to intervene whenever necessary. I’m convinced that God does battle on our behalf in the background, even though we just don’t always see it.
Today, take great comfort that your Father is just around the corner with a pair of binoculars watching to make sure that you’re alright.
He loves you.
Have a blessed weekend.
